Viennese Silver: Modern Design 1780-1918

The exhibition and accompanying catalogue "Viennese Silver. Modern Design 1780-1918" illustrates that the roots of modern design extend further back into history and are more complex than is generally assumed. In the late Eighteenth Century, and especially during the Viennese Biedermeier, we already find the evolution of a formal language that is still valid today. These objects are characterized by a reduction to basic geometric forms and a disregard for ornamentation, which makes them timeless and modern. In fin-de-siècle Vienna, Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser were inspired by the emphasis on functionalism as evidenced in home-decorating and everyday objects from this earlier period to create in their work for the Wiener Werkstätte the first radical design-objects of the twentieth century. Movements such as De Stijl and the Bauhaus helped to transmit this formal language to mass-produced objects and thus to contemporary design. Over two hundred carefully chosen silver objects dating from Neo-Classicism to the Wiener Werkstätte document Vienna´s contribution to the development of a modern formal idiom.

Oskar Kokoschka: Early Portraits from Vienna and Berlin, 1909-1914

Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) is considered one of the leading figures of the Expressionist movement. This catalogue provides an in-depth analysis of the sitters for his earliest portraits, painted in Vienna and Berlin on the eve of World War I, including Alma Mahler, Adolf Loos, and Peter Altenberg. In addition to the oil portraits, the catalogue includes a rare selection of the artist’s drawings as well as examples of Kokoschka’s work for the Wiener Werkstätte, such as designs for postcards, fans and an illustrated book entitled The Dreaming Youths. Special attention is devoted to the architect Adolf Loos, who had a guilding role in the artistic development of the young Kokoschka. It also includes essays by a number of prominent scholars on the artistic and cultural milieu of the era.

New Worlds: German and Austrian Art 1890-1940

For this inaugural catalogue for Neue Galerie New York, a distinguished group of international scholars surveys the development of modern art complemented by biographies on the artists represented in the museum's collection. Emphasis is placed upon the American reception to their work, a previously little-explored area in this field. In this context, the role of museums, art dealers, patrons and critics are examined as well. Gusav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and artists of the Wiener Werkstätte are among the catalogue’s featured artists. Leading figures, such as Max Beckmann, Peter Behrens, Otto Dix, Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe are also examined in the context of key movements in Germany such as the Brücke, the Blaue Reiter, Neue Sachlichkeit, and the Bauhaus. Beautifully illustrated, the catalogue also includes a complete checklist on the works discussed and an extensive bibliography on the period.
