Masterful Illusions: Japanese Prints in the Anne van Biema Collection


The publication of Masterful Illusions: Japanese Prints in the Anne van Biema Collection and the accompanying exhibition are the museum’s first major presentation of Japanese prints from the Edo period (1615 – 1868). They come from a collection of more than three hundred ukiyo-e prints acquired by Anne van Biema since the 1960s, and represent her personal choices from the tens of thousands of woodblock prints published in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The prints selected for this publication and exhibition reveal how artistic imagination and superlative technical skill combined to create compelling images of the actors and courtesans of the urban demimonde, legendary heroes and villains, classical and contemporary literary themes, and the natural world. Although the prints can be appreciated for their aesthetic qualities alone, they also yield insights into the rich, complex culture of the urban centers of Edo, Osaka, and Kyoto in Edo period Japan. This is a comprehensive 362-page publication with color illustrations and five essays contextualizing the imagery with the period, culture, customs, and formal and aesthetic qualities.

Caravan Kingdoms: Yemen and the Ancient Incense Trade


For more than a thousand years, from around 800 BCE to 600 CE, the kingdoms of Qataban, Saba (biblical Sheba), and Himyar, in present-day Yemen, grew fabulously and famously wealthy. They derived their wealth from control over the caravan routes of the southern Arabian Peninsula and, in particular, from the international trade in frankincense and myrrh. Excavations at the capitals of these ancient kingdoms have yielded spectacular examples of ashlar architecture, distinctive stone funerary sculpture, coins, elaborate inscriptions on stone, bronze, and wood, and sophisticated metalwork. Admired for its fragrant and abundant foliage and luxuriant pastures, Yemen was central to the ancient “global economy” that extended from the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean. It is no wonder that it was known to the Greeks and Romans as “Arabia the Blessed.” The exhibition Caravan Kingdoms: Yemen and the Ancient Incense Trade and its accompanying publication explore this rich and little-known period of cultural achievement and internationalism in the southern Arabian Peninsula.

Hokusai's achievement as a designer of commercial and privately commissioned prints, as an illustrator of printed books, and as a painter is explored in depth in this two-volume catalogue of an exhibition co-organized by the Freer and Sackler Galleries and the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, in cooperation with the Tokyo National Museum. Featured for the first time since 1960 (the two hundredth anniversary of Hokusai’s birth) is a substantial selection from the Freer Gallery’s extraordinary collection of paintings by Hokusai, which was assembled mainly by the American collector and philanthropist Charles Lang Freer (1854-1919). The catalogue is fully illustrated in color and black and white and is accompanied by eight comprehensive essays that contextualize the work.

Japanese Masterworks from the Price Collection


Joe Price purchased his first Japanese painting in the 1950s, under the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright. Over the next five decades, he and his wife Etsuko would collect more than 200 masterpieces from the Edo period (1615-1868), a time when Japan had isolated itself from the rest of the world. Curiously, during that period of national seclusion, independent and diversely creative artists flourished as never before. Today, the Etsuko and Joe Price Collection is placed among the finest in the world.

The detailed patterns evident in many of the works reflect the high regard artists of the period held for textile designers. The expressiveness in the eyes of the various animals, demons, deities, and people depicted suggest that they all inhabited the same world rather than different spiritual levels—the prominent religious theory of the time. The animal world becomes more animated, landscapes have their own light, spirits are alive, past becomes present, evoking a mood that suggests familiarity with all worlds, above and below. At the collection's core are screens, hanging scrolls, fans, and some of the finest examples of the distinctive, hauntingly preternatural renderings of animal life by Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800), one of the most innovative and imaginative of Kyoto's eighteenth-century painters. Jakuchu's prominence in recent decades has been greatly aided by the Price's intensive interest in his work. The extensive imagery featured in this catalogue represents the rich aesthetic diversity that characterized the Edo period. Essays by leading scholars of Japanese painting and architect Frank O. Gehry put both the collection and the collector in context and provide insight into the wonders of Japanese art.

The Art of Xu Bing
Words without Meaning, Meaning without Words


Xu Bing (born 1955) stands out as a leading figure in the international art world. His works and installation pieces, including Ghosts Pounding the Wall (an actual rubbing of the Great Wall of China done at Jinshanling in 1990), and his ongoing exploration of language have brought him worldwide attention. As a teenager in China during its Cultural Revolution, Xu Bing experienced the emotional and social upheavals that marked this tumultuous time. He was removed from his "reactionary" parents in Beijing and sent to the provinces to work in a small farming commune as part of Mao Zedong's "rustication" program in 1974. His forced participation in the revolution led him to re-examine all he had known, from the meaning and appearance of Chinese characters to the purpose of the Great Wall and the value of art and culture. An accomplished calligrapher, printmaker, and art teacher, Xu Bing turned his simultaneous interest in and mistrust of language into an extended examination of Chinese characters. The result was the Book from the Sky, a powerful installation of books, scrolls, and panels for which he invented hundreds of new characters in the late 1980s. This uneasy play between the familiar and the unknown - these words without meaning - caused an uproar in the Beijing art community and led the Chinese government to censor Xu Bing, forcing him to emigrate to the United States in 1990. Featuring works in Square Word Calligraphy, his whimsical, invented language, this book traces Xu Bing’s career and provides illustrations and in-depth descriptions of his works. Author and art historian Britta Erickson provides an insightful look at the artist’s development, and Xu Bing himself contributes a fascinating chapter on his life and work.
